Quality Control Procedures for Structural Steel Detailing

How to run quality control on structural steel detailing: roles, check stages, comment loops, file control and what “checked” should mean.

Quality control in detailing is a procedure, not a personality trait. If the only check is “the senior person looks at it when they have time,” the office will ship whatever was on the plotter at 6 p.m. Write down who checks what, when a sheet is allowed to leave, and how comments come back.

This article describes a lightweight QC system that small and mid-size teams can actually run. It pairs with the issue checklist and common errors.

QC is not the same as the engineer’s approval review. Internal QC should happen before the reviewer ever sees the package. Sending the reviewer your first draft outsources your checking and burns goodwill.

Roles: detailer, checker, issuer

The person who drew the sheet should not be the only person who checks it. That does not require a large department. It requires a named checker and a named person who is allowed to send the transmittal. Combining those roles on a tiny job is fine; combining them silently is not.

RoleOwnsDoes not own
DetailerModel/CAD, first check, RFIsSelf-approval of the issue
CheckerIndependent review against checklistRewriting the whole job without notes
IssuerTransmittal, file names, drawing listSilent last-minute edits after the check

Check stages that match risk

  • Input check: right issue letters and specifications before layout starts
  • Layout check: grids, members, clashes — before connections multiply
  • Connection check: typicals and exceptions
  • Issue check: marks, BOM, title blocks, holds
  • Back-check: comments from the reviewer incorporated on all related sheets

Evidence, not vibes

A red-pen PDF, a checklist with initials, or comment status in the CAD standard are evidence. A Slack message that says “looks good” is not, because it cannot be found when a shop question arrives six weeks later. Keep the check record with the job files.

File and revision discipline

QC collapses if anyone can overwrite the issued PDF. Use a numbering system such as the one in drawing numbers and revisions. Issued files are read-only. New work happens on the next revision.

Measuring the system

Count escaped errors that the shop or reviewer found. If the same class repeats — marks, gauges, finishes — add a targeted check. Do not add twenty new checklist items because of one unique mistake.

A practical workflow

  1. Assign detailer, checker and issuer at kickoff.
  2. Run the input check before layout.
  3. Run layout and connection checks at the stated hold points.
  4. Complete the issue checklist and transmittal.
  5. Log reviewer comments and back-check related sheets.

Engineering tips

  • Check plots, not only the model view.
  • Keep a one-page QC note in the project folder so a substitute checker knows the standard.
  • If you use automation for approval sheets, include the generator inputs in the check (wrong input, pretty wrong output).

Common mistakes

Checker redraws instead of commenting

Then nobody learns, and you cannot see what changed. Mark the issue; let the detailer fix it.

QC only on the first issue

Revision C is where tired people skip the BOM. Back-check is part of QC.

Hiding holds so the package “looks complete”

That is a quality failure. Incomplete and honest beats complete and fictional.

Checklist

  • Roles named on the drawing list
  • Input check recorded
  • Checker is not the only detailer on that sheet
  • Issue checklist initialled
  • Issued PDFs stored read-only
  • Comment log exists
  • Back-check done after comments
  • Escaped errors filed for the next standard update

Frequently asked questions

Is ISO or AISC certification required to use this?

No. Those systems are valuable where they apply, but a small office can still name a checker and control revisions. Do not claim a certification you do not have.

What if the deadline makes a full check impossible?

Issue fewer sheets, or issue with explicit holds. Do not skip checks on the sheets you do send.

Should clients see the QC checklist?

Usually not. They should see a clean transmittal and honest holds. Internal records stay internal unless the contract requires them.

How does automation change QC?

It moves some errors from drafting to inputs. Check the inputs and a sample of outputs, not only one pretty cover sheet.

Where this leaves the work

QC is the agreement that a sheet does not leave because someone is tired of looking at it. Write the agreement down, then keep the evidence with the job.
