How to Use Built-up Check in Staad Tools

Check TAPERED STAAD properties against the original mill min/max limits. Clear web depth is overall depth minus both flange thicknesses, and exact limit values still pass.

Built-up Check replaces Staad BU Check. The desktop tool read selected OpenSTAAD members whose section name was Taper. The browser tool reads TAPERED MEMBER PROPERTY lines from an STD or ANL listing instead — STAAD.Pro does not need to be open.

What is checked

Only TAPERED properties are considered. Duplicate members that share the same property assignment appear once. Clear web depth is overall depth minus the two flange thicknesses, the same definition Staad2CAD uses.

A dimension fails only when it is strictly below the minimum or strictly above the maximum. Values sitting on the limit pass.

Default mill limits

  • Clear web depth: 0.175–1.500 m (175–1500 mm)
  • Web thickness: 0.004–0.020 m (4–20 mm)
  • Flange width: 0.125–0.500 m (125–500 mm)
  • Flange thickness: 0.006–0.050 m (6–50 mm)

Changing the unit selector reloads those eight presets. You can then edit any field before Check. Reversed ranges (minimum greater than maximum) return a validation error instead of a misleading fail list.

Workflow

  1. Set Property units to match the STAAD input (m or mm).
  2. Upload the model listing or paste the TAPERED lines.
  3. Confirm or edit the eight min/max fields.
  4. Click Check. Metrics show how many unique tapered properties were reviewed and how many fail.
  5. CSV export is for the failing review, not a mill order.

How to read the table

Each row is one tapered property: web start/end (clear depth), tw, outside/inside flange width, and outside/inside flange thickness. Metre properties display three decimals; millimetre properties display one. Status is PASS or the failing dimension.

Common mistakes

  • Do not leave units on metres if the STD file is in millimetres (500 8 800 …).
  • Catalog sections and PRISMATIC members are skipped. Only TAPERED is checked.
  • Exact 175 mm clear web depth is PASS. 174 mm is FAIL.
  • This is a mill-limit screen, not a compact-section or buckling check.
